clarity makes money

One of my favorite creators yesterday bashed someone’s crappy offer of “I’ll help you make your first $1 online!”.
I sat there thinking, aw crap that’s something I talk about as well.
The email went on to say that he helped this person pivot to focusing on a high-income skill (in this case web development / design).
After the pivot, this person apparently starting making his first dollars online.
I’m not sure how he positioned his first offer, but if nobody understands HOW you would help someone make their first $ online, of course nobody is going to bite.
I don’t think it’s a bad business model, it’s not clear what he’s offering.
But see if you were to break it down into high-level categories:
- attracting an audience
- building an email list
- creating an offer (services & digital products)
- selling your offers
You can quickly discover that there’s skills involved here:
- writing
- using technology
- networking
- sales
If you have these skills and want to help others make money online, that’s what you should be talking about, not just flashing a sign that says “I’ll help you make money!”…people will view that as a scam (a lot of it is too).
- Write like Shakespeare to attract your dream clients
- Network like [X person] so you can [do Y]
You see where I’m going…
You have to get clear on the actual things you can do to help others get results…otherwise you’re guaranteeing results with no action plan behind it (not believable).
I also believe that you have to make money online BEFORE you help others do it.
If you haven’t seen results for yourself, how are you going to promise results to others?
In my case, I’ve made money online by:
- Helping creators identify their Solopreneur value proposition, business idea, offer, ICP and a 4 week action plan.
- Helping two clients with automation and email marketing to grow their businesses.
I felt better after realizing I’m not holding a giant scammy sign…there is substance to what I’m doing and it’s being proven by clients paying for my services and products.
I believe I can help you make your first dollar through effective writing, networking, building an email list, providing services and delivering…because I’ve done it / currently doing it.
I also believe if you have a business and want to grow it, you can use email marketing to do that…because I’ve done it / currently doing it.
So when you’re looking at your offer, step back and ask yourself if you’d buy it.
- Is it clear what I’m offering?
- Do I actually have substance behind my claims? (if not, just be transparent about it, I’ll be the first to tell you I don’t know everything about building a business online)
- Do I have any social proof?
- Is this something that someone wants or am I just guessing?
I don’t have everything figured out, but my gut and experience tells me, you have to have substance and clarity underneath your flashy banner or website, otherwise, expect to be lumped into the masses who don’t make it when building a business online.
I hope this helps you think through how you build/grow your business and accelerate your sales.
