you're asking the wrong questions
Read Time: 4m
A common question I receive and see on 𝕏 is:
”What should I provide for my product or service?”
I think this is the wrong question to ask.
UNLESS you’ve already identified which problem you’re going to solve.
That’s like someone saying, “What type of restaurant should I open up?”.
(I know nothing about opening a restaurant.)
But I guarantee you, these are better questions to ask yourself:
- What demographic are you serving?
- families?
- upscale?
- high income / low income?
- Where are you going to open it?
- What will people pay for in the area?
- What makes the best restaurants successful in that area?
Same applies to solopreneurship.
You have to figure out who you’re serving and what problem you’re solving.
And it doesn’t have to be perfect.
For example, I help solopreneurs accelerate sales.
To me, that’s still too broad.
But as I grow, interact and learn, I’m following the signals.
I’ll further refine it over time.
Recently, I had an inbound lead hit my inbox about from a busy solopreneur.
He needed help:
- organizing his email list
- generating an email sequence
- setting up ConvertKit Creator Network to grow his email list faster
I love helping people with things like this.
To me, this is a signal.
It’s telling me that solopreneurs may need help accelerating sales through email.
Bottom line is, if you’re endlessly thinking about what your service or product is, to me that means you haven’t identified a clear enough problem to solve.
So what do you do?
Here are 3 actions you can take, depending on the following common scenarios I see:
- If you don’t know what service to offer → send a DM to someone who engages regularly with your content and ask them what their challenges are.
- If you don’t know which problem you plan to solve + don’t know what you are good at → write until you can’t write anymore. Get it all out. The answers lie within you.
- If you’re only focused on making money → write out WHY you want the money and how you will attain it. If you’re only focused on making money, you will repel it. You must identify WHY you want it (i.e., financial freedom, time freedom, location freedom).
